Day 145 – Shanghai to Sanya

We checked out of the hotel at 8:30 a.m. and left for the Shanghai Museum.  It was a nice museum and we saw a lot of Chinese exhibits.  The pictures tell it better, the things that we saw.

Bed

Cabinet.

Pillow.  The horns on the cows make sure you only use one side.  It was also hard!

 Yak drinking Vessel

Mongolian Wedding dress.

Ancient Mongolian Garments

Fishing Canoes.

After the Museum, we were all thrilled that the day was a lot clearer than yesterday had been so that we could to go the “Pearl of the Orient TV Tower.”  It compares to Seattle’s Space Needle in some ways.  You have fast elevators that they crowd you into and take you up 90 meters.  Then you take another elevator up to 260 meters.  There was still a lot of smog, so seeing great distances was not possible, but you could see a lot.

Packed into the elevator.

A relatively clear day…

It was really eerie to walk on the clear glass and look down so far straight below you.  I was dizzy at first, and it was rather unnerving wondering if it will hold you, but confidence grows with time.

 Yea, floating…

The lower levels of the TV Tower held pictures and scenes of old Shanghai.
 A royal wedding sedan chair.

This was a rather funny scene from inside the farmer’s house.  The baby is actually churning the butter as she runs her feet back and forth.  It also keeps the baby where she can keep an eye on him or her.

Part of the Chinese New Year Celebration scene.  This was the puppet play.   The whole scenes went on for several levels and you just felt like some of them could come alive at any minute.

From a green screen you went back of this and could get your picture taken.  Kind of fun.

We didn’t have time for lunch when we were done there, so I was glad that I had brought some apples along to munch on, because we went directly to the airport.  We stopped at an airport KFC for lunch and just as we were finishing, one of the group went to get her ticket and saw the extremely long lines.  We all decided we better get a move on and get in line for our tickets.  It took a good half hour standing in line to get the tickets.  Then the flight was delayed for 45 minutes, so it was a lot of sit around and wait time.

It was a long flight to Sanya, the furthest south city in China on Hainan Island.  It is tropical and warm.  However, our window, that opens up to a balcony, is not sound proof and we are wondering how well we will sleep….  We hear all the traffic below, which, like elsewhere in China, is a lot of honking horns.a
