Day 75 - Piano Day

Day 75

David had classes this morning.  I got laundry and dishes done and then worked on stuff for my classes.  We met at the canteen for lunch.  The free teacher buffet was bringing out hot food and we were very surprised because they don’t usually do that (alas, it is usually cold when we get there).  We hurried and got our plates and then just after we sat down, we see lines of students being brought in.  We supposed that they were having a “college day” for the High School Students and brought them here for lunch.  We know they weren’t university students because they all had uniforms on.  We also saw an “albino” Chinese boy.

We did things around here until about 3:30 and then we left to go to Kathy Hong’s apartment.  She is a Chinese woman that goes to meetings with us.  She holds Canada and Chinese passports and therefore, she can choose to go with us in the Ex-pats group or with the Chinese Nationals.  I think because she hopes to someday move back to Canada or the US, she wants to keep up her English skills and meet with us.  (She does know of Chinese Nationals that are LDS in Ji’nan, but that is all she can say and all we can know.)  Her son, Hanson, was baptized last year in the pool that is in the Hanlin Hotel where we meet.  David is her one of her home teachers.  Her mother was a famous Chinese opera star and they have a baby grand piano in their apartment. (It boggles the mind to think how they got it up ten flights of stairs in their building, but they did!  No elevator!)   She invited us to come play the piano and then have dinner with them.

Dinner was dumplings, very good ones.  We played some music, but just as we were thinking we needed to leave, Kathy’s husband, Simon, came home.  He is not a member, but allows Kathy to freely believe.  We had not met him before so it was nice to meet him.  Simon is very personable and knows English quite well.  It turns out he went to college in the US at…. Winona State!!!!  He knew where all the places were that I knew in Southern Minnesota!  We were both amazed at how small a world it can be sometimes!  We finally had to pull ourselves away because the buses stop running at 9 p.m. and we would have had to try and get a taxi after that.  It was a great visit.
